europe backpacking trip/mochilao 2003

paris

i looooved paris! despite the shocking smells of the tgv (french metro) and every other public area of the city, i fell in love with the city of light. i am definitely coming to work here next summer!

clara was very efficient in mapping out a walking tour of the city for us... notre dame, louvre, d'orsay, la tour eiffel, champs d'elysees, l'arc de triomphe, place de la concorde, le quartier latin, the bastille, les invalides, etc. etc. etc. we walked ALL over the city.

our last night in paris we met up with clara's friend fernanda and two of her friends--they've all been studying fashion in milan for the summer. we went to a great club on the champs d'elysees called le queen... supposedly it's a gls club but i think us girls got hit on more than thiago, to his dismay, i'm sure. the music was absolutely incredible and i will always remember the "(almost) perfect man" (everyone says he was gay, but i refuse to believe so).

the next morning we were set to spend a relaxing day in the jardin du luxembourg when all of a sudden cla realised her bag with all her passports, money, and credit cards were missing. we ran off like nuts to the metro station police, retraced our every move, and finally gave up on finding it. her parents cancelled her credit cards and we went to the embassy to report the stolen passport... we were shocked to find that a british tourist found her bag and returned it, cash et al, to the embassy. our faith in humankind has been restored.

cathedrale de notre dame de paris.

we definitely did not climb up the stairs to see the gargoyles.
l'arc de triomphe.

a quick run into the middle of the champs d'elysees traffic for a good shot of l'arc.

a very hot day to be carrying around 18-kg backpacks.

here we are in the middle of bvd. st-germain in the quartier latin. you can't tell here, but we are shining with sweat.
up on the eiffel tower.

the highest level, the third one, was closed so we only made it to the second one... nevertheless the view was breathtaking. though we had to run in the parisian heat to make it, we managed to watch the sunset.

after le queen.

five very clubbed-out brazilians.
the sparkling tower.

they turn on the glittering lights for 15 minutes to amuse us 'touristes'.
